With the challenging motto of ‘I am fierce with the fierce’ and fearsome crest of a hand holding a dagger, transfixing a boar’s head, bearers today of the proud name of Chisholm have Scottish roots that stretch back to both present-day Roxburghshire, in the Borders, and much further north in Inverness-shire.

• Originally descended from a band of Norman warriors by the name of ‘de Chisholme’, who fought at the side of Duke William of Normandy at the battle of Hastings in 1066, they later acquired lands in Scotland.

• They fought valiantly in the cause of the nation's freedom and independence, with Sir John de Chisholme of Berwick battling at the side of the great warrior king Robert the Bruce at the battle of Bannockburn in 1314.
