The origins of the Clan Cooper are shrouded in mystery.
• But by the 17th century one branch of the family had become major landowners.
• Part of their Edinburgh estate remains intact to this day.
• Their power and influence lasted barely a century, destroyed in the main thanks to an act of vengeance carried out by Oliver Cromwell.
• Since then many a Cooper has made a name for himself on the world stage, including the Scot who became one of England's greatest poets.
