New York City Tartan Clan History
A universal tartan designed by Alistair Buchan to celebrate Tartan Day 6th April 2002 in New York City on the occasion of the greatest parade of Pipes and Drums ever seen. Its original name was 'Tunes of Glory'.
Colourings are for the streets and buildings of New York: green is Central Park; blue the rivers (Hudson, Harlem & East) that surround Manhattan; the two black stripes are to honour the memory of the twin towers of the World Trade centre destroyed in '9/11' (The American way of signifying September 11th). When Mayor Giuliani saw the tartan he requested that be called New York City.
The New York City Clan
The New York City Tartan is registered at the Scottish Tartan Authority, The New York City Clan over the year has spread all over the world. The New York City Family clan also has a number of septs which are an offshoot of the New York City Clan. The New York City Tartan, be it the New York City Modern Tartan or Ancient Tartan is worn at all major functions by members of the New York City Family Clan. The Tartan Authority is the sole and only register of Scottish Tartans in Scotland of which New York City Tartan is one of over 500.
