With the blood of both Scandinavians and Gaels flowing through their veins, bearers of the Haldane name are heirs to a vibrantly rich heritage.

Gaining high honours and distinction, they fought for the cause of Scotland's freedom and independence, with Almer Haldane of Gleneagles at the side of the great warrior king Robert the Bruce while, in 1513, Sir John Haldane was among the 5,000 Scots including King James IV who fell at the battle of Flodden.

In more peaceful times, J.B.S. Haldane was the physiologist, evolutionary biologist, geneticist and mathematician who coined the words "clone" and "cloning", while one of his younger sisters was the Scottish novelist and poet Naomi Haldane, better known as Naomi Mitchison and who, as a friend of J.R.R. Tolkien, acted as a proofreader for his great literary work "The Lord of the Rings".

The colourful and inspiring tales of the Haldanes are recorded here.
